Birding
The area around San Blas, Nayarit has some of the finest birding in Mexico, offering the chance to see more than 30 Mexican endemics, large numbers of neo-tropical migrants, and many tropical birds at their northern-most range.
Within 60 miles of this semi-tropical, coastal town, you can see more than 300 species of birds and visit habitats that include pelagic, coastal, shore, mangrove, flatland, intermediate mountain, and high mountain. All this within an hour ride by car or boat.
Specialties include: Spotted Wren, Citreoline Trogon, Elegant Quail, Purplish-backed Jay, and Russet-crowned Motmot.
Winter is the time to see Northern migrants with December through April the peak months. Local species can be seen year-round. Some of the specialties that nest here in the summer are: Elegant Trogon, Russet-crowned Motmot, Rosy Thrush-Tanager, and Spotted Wren. Summer is also a good time to see lots of Least Storm Petrels, Black Storm Petrels, and Black-vented Shearwater.
